7:30 Program – Larry Weill: Adventures in the Life of an Wilderness Park Ranger in the Adirondacks
Larry Weill, an ex-Wilderness Park Ranger and Adirondack author, will be with us for the March 10th Chapter Meeting. Weill spent three years living in a tent as the "trail ranger" in the West Canada Lakes Wilderness Area, which our Chapter has adopted for maintenance and improvement.
He has written a series of three books about these years, from 1979-1981, when he covered the Northville-Lake Placid Trail from Piseco to the Cedar River Flow, and sometime beyond. His books include "Excuse Me, Sir... Your Socks are on Fire," "Pardon Me, Sir... There's a Moose in Your Tent," and most recently, "Forgive Me, Ma'am... Bears Don't Wear Blue." (This last book was written with his 15 year-old daughter, Kelly, who will also be in attendance.)
These books are written with a comical slant, as the author often encountered novice hikers and campers who were completely unprepared for the region's expansive wilderness. His observations on human nature and the "mountain man ego" border on hysterical, and have had his readers in stitches for years.
The program will include an introduction with slide show, followed by a possible reading and questions/answer period. He will also gladly sign books for anyone interested at the conclusion of the program. All are welcome!

6:30 Workshop – Making your home the solution to pollution: Tips and tricks you can do around the house to lessen your impact on stormwater pollution
Stormwater pollution is the leading cause of water quality impairments to many of the urban waters in Monroe County. The Stormwater Coalition of Monroe County, comprised of most municipalities in the County, has developed a stormwater management program intended to reduce stormwater pollutants discharged to our area creeks and streams.
Join fellow hiker & Winter 46'er Andy Sansone from the Monroe County Department of Environmental Services as he talks about the many things we can do around our home to lessen these impacts. From the potentially hazardous materials we purchase and use to the way we manage and maintain our urban landscape, all have potential to degrade or improve our water quality if done thoughtfully and with care.

[Paddle] [Local] [Away] [Younger] [Main] An Invitation from the Monroe County Department of Parks - Update

Pick Up the Parks
A new initiative from the Monroe County Department of Parks
April 10th, 2010

Join us and several local recreation and environmental groups in kicking off this new local stewardship event. In this first year, we will be targeting 4 parks: Ellison, Genesee Valley, Greece Canal, and Ontario Beach Parks for clean up and other park improvements. Why just four? As you know there are 21 parks within the Monroe County Parks system. As this is a first year event, we wanted to identify popular parks that could also accommodate our widespread community. We welcome your ideas for future projects and will certainly add more parks to the event as community support grows.

Email or call today to register your family, group of friends, club, organization, scout troop, or class! Contact Ryan Loysen at rloysen@monroecounty.gov or 585-753-7281.

Be sure to tell us your group size, preferred park, e-mail address, and phone number, or just come on out to one of the project sites on April 10th and register on-site. Orientation begins at 10 a.m. at each project site with refreshments and additional information. Group projects and field work will begin at 10:30 a.m.

The Monroe County Parks belong to all of us, so let's join together to keep them clean and green. Check back for additional event details, meet-up locations and park information at http://www.monroecounty.gov/parks.

7:30 Program – Jeff Liebel: Northern Forest Canoe Trail - Update
We read and hear much about the long distance hiking opportunities available to us as outdoors enthusiasts, from the AT to the Fingerlakes trail. But the earliest long distance highways in our country were the numerous water trails. Come join us in April to hear a presentation about the Northern Forest Canoe Trail, and how you can now enjoy paddling some of the earliest "highways" in our country. The Northern Forest Canoe Trail spans 740 miles from NY to ME, encompassing travel on rivers, streams and lakes. Come join us in exploring this new long distance trail opportunity.

[Away] Backpack to Two Adirondack Wilderness Areas - Update
Experience an Adirondack spring on this pre-black fly season backpack to two beautiful backcountry locations, Grass Pond in the Ha-De-Ron-Dah Wilderness (southwest of Old Forge) and Queer Lake, in the Pigeon Lake Wilderness (north of Eagle Bay). Rated easy due to the low mileage and small altitude gain, this trip is suitable for beginning backpackers or those with little backpacking experience. We'll leave Rochester late Friday morning and arrive at the Grass Pond trailhead on Route 28 in mid-afternoon. A backpack of about 1.5 miles will take us to Grass Pond, where we'll set up camp and spend the night. On Saturday morning, we'll break camp and hike back to our vehicles. From there, we'll head to Eagle Bay, where a short drive north on Big Moose Road will take us to the trailhead for Queer Lake. A backpack of about 3.3 miles will take us to the lean-to and campsite on Queer Lake, where we'll spend Saturday night. After breakfast on Sunday morning we'll hike back to our vehicles and head home.
For more information or to sign up, contact Dave Harrison at (585) 442-3223 or or Bob Krenzer at 334-6146 or .
